Retablo de Santa Ángela de la Cruz
Sharing the same stylistic features and proportions as the Altarpiece of Our Lady of Antigua (Virgen de la Antigua), located at the end of the Epistle nave (nave de la Epístola), this altarpiece forms a pendant to it, although it presents certain modifications.
The altar table is likewise clad in ceramic tiles. In the area of the predella, a display case with an iron-and-glass door was created to house a relic of Saint Angela of the Cross (Santa Ángela de la Cruz) in a silver reliquary. This is the same relic that appears on the pedestal of the canopy float of the Most Holy Virgin of Bitterness (Santísima Virgen de la Amargura) during the Brotherhood’s Station of Penitence to the Holy Cathedral Church) each Palm Sunday.
The central niche is occupied by an image of Saint Angela, intended to be dressed in the habit of the Order. The image was donated to the Brotherhood by Mr. José Luis González García- Ramos. The bust is the work of the sculptor Gabriel Cuadrado. In her hands she bears her personal attributes: the Cross, alluding to the religious institute she founded, and a closed book, referring to her little-known work as an ascetical writer, a field in which she achieved remarkable mystical depth despite the limited education she received in childhood.
Some years later, the image was restored by Francisco Berlanga. With the prior approval of the parish priest of Saint Peter and Saint John, the image was blessed in the convent of the Sisters of the Cross on February 28 th 1991.
The altar itself was restored in 1982 by the gilder Manuel Calvo Carmona, at a cost of 12.,750 pesetas.
In the attic section stands a sculpture of Saint Joseph with the Christ Child (San José con el Niño), and above the niche there is a cresting element bearing the Maltese Cross (Cruz de Malta).
The altarpiece is listed in the 1894 inventory of possessions belonging to the Sacramental Brotherhood.
In 2024, it was restored by Enrique Gutiérrez Carrasquilla.
